Root, Install CWM and Update Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100 with KitKat 4.4

This is gonna be a lengthy tutorial for those who have not rooted and installed CWM on their Samsung Galaxy S2. If you’re lying on the rest category, lucky you. You can now manually update Galaxy S2 GT I9100 to latest android KitKat 4.4 version. This tutorial has been divided to 3 parts; rooting your Galaxy S2, Installing CWM recovery and flashing S2 with unofficial KitKat 4.4 firmware. Lets’s chow chow.

Samsung Galaxy S2 and official KitKat 4.4 update was always been a popular topic and if you’re still waiting to get an official KitKat update for your S2, come on..  You won’t get that baby. Samsung is too lazy to roll out latest android firmware for their old devices. But we had a hope for S2 as it’s one of the most popular and charming phones from the Galaxy series, but it’s been too late.

Here we’re dealing with the unofficial KitKat update for Samsung Galaxy S2 G I9100. Note this variant number as S2 has many other variants. In this guide, I’m associated with the basic version I9100 and don’t try this method on any other variants as it may lead to bricking of your device.

Root Galaxy S2 GT I9100 – Pre-requisites

  • Make sure that you have installed necessary Samsung drivers in your computer. If not, download the drivers from here and install.
  • Charge your battery at least 60% and enable USB debugging as follows Settings>Applications>Development> Android Debugging.
  • Make a backup of all important files including files in the phone storage, contacts, call logs etc. You can also use Google account to save the same.
  • Again check the model number of your device and ensure that you have the one which is specified here.

Step 1. How to Root Galaxy S2 GT I9100 Running on ICS/JB

  1. First of all, download this rooting package from here [Link] and extract it to any folder on your desktop.
  2. Now connect your S2 to the computer assuming that you have installed all necessary drivers on your PC. ou can also install Samsung Kies if you have problems with above given driver link.
  3. After connecting your phone to computer, check in the phone whether it’s showing Android Debugging notification appearing. If it’s there, proceed.
  4. Now in the extracted folder, click on Runme.bat and let it detect the phone and root it. It will also install busybox to the phone.
  5. It will reboot after successful rooting. Also check if there’s Superuser app installed on your app menu. You’re done with the first step, rooting your Galaxy S2 I9100.

Step 2. How to Install CWM Recovery on Galaxy S2 GT I9100 on Jellybean

  1. Download Odin tool [link] and CWM file [Link].
  2. Boot your phone to download mode by pressing and holding Volume down + Home button followed by power off.
  3. Now, open the Odin tool on your computer and connect your S2 to the system via USB cable being in download mode.
  4. If you have properly installed the necessary drivers for your S2 in the computer, the Odin will detect the device and the ID:COM port will turn yellow/blue followed by “added” message in the white box [In the Odin tool itself].
  5. Click on PDA button and load the downloaded GT-I9100_JB_ClockworkMod-Recovery_6.0.2.9.tar file.
  6. Now start the process by clicking Start button followed by checking the Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time options in Odin tool.
  7. After doing so, unplug your phone from the computer and Press & hold Volume up + Home button and by holding the two, press Power key till you get into Recovery interface followed by power off.

How to Install CWM Recovery on Galaxy S2 GT I9100 on ICS

  1. If your phone is on ICS 4.0.4, try this method.
  2. Download CWM file from here [link] and transfer it yo your SD card.
  3. Now turn off your phone and boot into stock recover by pressing and holding Volume up + Home button+ Power key simultaneously.
  4. On recovery, navigate using volume buttons and choose apply update from external storage and select the transferred ZIP file. Proceed. Done. 

Now you have successfully completed the 2 steps, rooted your S2 and installed CWM recovery. So here comes the final step, flashing the unofficial KitKat firmware on your S2.

Step 3. How to Flash KitKat 4.4 on Samsung Galaxy S2

  • Download KitKat ROM [link] and google apps package [link] and transfer to your SD card.
  • Now reboot your phone into recovery {cwm} by pressing and holding Vol up, Home and Power button on the same time followed by switching off the device.
  • Finally Select install zip from SD Card to choose the KitKat 4.4 Firmware Package that you transferred. Do the same with Google apps package.
  • Now reboot your phone and enjoy with KitKat on your Samsung Galaxy S2.
